The Islesboro Historical Society and Museum. Built in 1894, it was originally the island meeting-house. In 1906, it was the island school before it became the historical society in the 1960s. Photo by author.

On the next floor, evidence of the former school was clearly apparent. The main room on the second floor of the museum is set up to resemble a 1930s classroom. Life-sized silhouettes depicting children sitting at their desks are arranged in orderly rows around the room. Information about the history of Islesboro is presented on the back of each of the cutouts. The second floor has another interesting room, which recreates the F.S. Pendleton & Company Store, which for one hundred years was the largest general store on the island. On the wall of the room there is a large photo of the store in its early days. Pieces of original furniture have been donated, and items that were sold one hundred years ago are displayed around the room. The Pendleton Store closed permanently in 1979.
