Chapter Seven

June 5th, 1852

I love that I have something to work toward on this never-ending journey of ours. Making a dress for a little motherless child has made me feel as if I’m doing something good with my time and not just plodding along toward a place that might never appear. It makes me feel good about myself that I have a skill that’s needed by someone.

All of my life I’ve been told to sit down and look pretty, but there’s more to me than looking pretty, and people are starting to see that finally. I feel blessed that I’ve stepped into this new world full of people who have to fight for everything they have and don’t have things handed to them on a silver platter. I feel like I belong here so much more than I ever felt as if I belonged at home. I feel as if I’ve found where I belong, and it’s wherever this wonderful group of people that I’m with is. Whether it’s in a camp in Independence, Missouri or in the middle of the great plains somewhere. I’m where I should be.
