Joe Beckerle and his sister Pauline wade into the Pascack Brook at the swimming spot called White Rocks around 1910. White Rocks was a favorite summer spot on the brook for all the children living west of Pearl Street. Here, Joe gives a Tarzan pose before he enters the water. A changing house was located nearby at a place upstream called Souleâs. (Beckerle family.)
These two unidentified boys sitting on the banks of the Muddy Brook are enjoying the view around 1950. The Muddy Brook flows south from Lake Lucile in New City. This stone bridge over Jefferson Avenue was built in 1910, replacing a white wooden bridge. It was in these waters that pearls were discovered in the mussels that once thrived here, inspiring the name Pearl River for the town after 1872. (Robert Knight.)
