1. Pale, sweaty skin

2. Faintness and dizziness

3. Weakness

4. Tremors

5. Apathy and irritability

6. Drooling from the mouth

7. Numbness in the hands and feet

Hyperglycemia occurs when there is not enough insulin to transport sugar (glucose) to the cells. If medical treatment is delayed for several hours or days, patients may slip into a diabetic coma. Signs and symptoms include:

1. Red, dry, warm skin

2. Rapid, weak pulse, dehydration

3. Dim Vision

4. Sweet or fruity breath

5. Vomiting or abdominal pain

6. Intense thirst

7. Frequent Urination

Treatment is for the patient to rehydrate and take insulin. If insulin is not available, immediate evacuation is required. In the mean time, you can have the patient drink as much water as possible to reduce sugar levels in the body.

Caring for Unresponsive Patients Unresponsive Patient care requires a lot of detective work on the part of the first aider. If no bystanders are nearby to interview for information, you will be left to determine the MOI or Illness on your own. Thus, you’ll make sure that the scene is safe, apply BSI, and check the ABC’s and perform and complete Physical Exam. If there is no evidence of an injury, assess for signs of shock, breathing difficulty, seizure signs (bitten tongue, urine, muscle spasms), are the pupils equal, response to painful stimuli, and check for medical alert bracelets or medallion (necklace).
