Chapter Seven
âCraziest thing Iâve ever seen,â Mr. Langton said.
The group of four stood near a tractor with a forklift attachment on the front.
âCows canât climb trees,â Charlie said.
âMaybe not,â Mr. Langton said. He had a wide face and a friendly smile, and his coveralls were marked with dirt. He lifted his cap and scratched his bald head. âExcept itâs there right in front of us. Iâd be okay with a tree-climbing cow if she also knew how to get herself back down. Sheâs so upset, Iâm afraid sheâs going to hurt herself.â
Mr. Langton had to raise his voice to be heard above the bawling of the calf and the mooing of the cow. âAnd that calf hasnât moved from the base of the tree for hours. Itâs getting hungrier and hungrier and is crying for milk. I canât get my tractor in too close in case I hurt it. And I donât want to rope the poor calf. Itâs already under enough stress.â
âWhat do you want to do with the tractor?â Amy asked.
âI want to raise the forklift above the cow,â Mr. Langton answered. âAnd then I can climb the tree and run some wide straps under the cowâs belly and attach them to the forklift. I should be able to lift the poor animal high enough to clear the branch and then set her down. Except the cow is too worked up right now. Sheâll be kicking like crazy if I try to lift her. She might injure herself.â
âYou were right to ask if I could bring some medicine to calm her down,â Selena said. âThis shouldnât be too tricky once we get the cow nice and dozy. Same for the calf.â
âCows canât climb trees,â Charlie said. He pulled out his notebook. This was twice now in two days that heâd needed to underline something.
Rule 59: Cows canât climb trees.
No need for an exclamation point. This was a simple statement of fact. Except there was a cow in a tree right in front of him.
