Bruised knuckles. Savage beast

Night came while I waited. It slipped in, taking me by surprise while I sat huddled against the base of a tree. I stared toward the ground. I stared toward my hand. Still I couldn’t see them. I didn’t want to be here now. I didn’t want to be sitting outside the dorm rooms waiting for strangers. I didn’t want to face them, to demand from them. I didn’t want to try to understand.

Lights blinked on in the room overhead. I sucked in a hard breath and then lifted my gaze.

Not him…

Not him…

Please not him…

The light flicked off again. I braced my hand against the dirt and shoved to stand. True to her word, Huntleigh was long gone, leaving barely a whisper behind. A growl echoed from somewhere inside the dorm, followed by another, and then another. They were angry, turning on each other.

Minutes later the door opened and a dark silhouette stepped out. Blond hair shimmered in the lights before he was gone, head down, shoulders hunched with hands shoved into the pockets of his dark hoodie.

My heart gave a tremble and then a thud as I turned and followed. I hated this, this awful poisonous feeling—this treachery. He moved fast, long strides cutting across the grassed area before in a slow bound he pushed into a run.

Ground-eating strides swept through the trees. I shoved forward, breaking into a run further up from him. If he turned his head, he’d see me bounding between the trees. But he never did. Lost in his own thoughts, Bond left the Academy grounds behind and raced toward the city.

I swept my hand in front of me, shoving aside branches and leaves as I tried to keep up. He was graceful, barely snapping a twig, heavy thudding strides timed so perfectly they were like the heartbeat of the earth.

I fumbled like an idiot, short, sharp strides, follow by bounding ones like a damn gazelle. My thighs were on fire by the time we left the forest behind and stepped out into the opening with the city lights blinking in front of us. I sucked in hard breaths and slowed down, letting him get a little ahead before I followed. Still he never paid me any mind, seemingly lost in his thoughts.

I followed, waiting for him to get further along the darkened street before I slipped from car to car with my cap and my hoodie pulled low. The disguise was perfect. I wasn’t me in these clothes. All the horror seemed to belong to someone else, another Vampire, another woman. But I was the one to save her...even if all I could do was save her heart.

Bond glanced both ways before he slipped into an alley. My heart trembled with the motion as I stepped out from behind a minivan and followed. I was on the hunt, but this time my prey was the Wolf I cared for.

I turned into the alley, blinked into the darkness as my eyes adjusted and then listened for his footsteps as they softly rang out.
