As promised, within a few hours, Alexia was dried, dressed, made up, and her hair set as if she were going out to an event that night with Jean-Paul. Her evening gown was a halter style, soft pink, and fell to her feet. She had paired it with black gloves that covered her arms up to her elbows. The look reminded her of Audrey Hepburn. She wore a diamond teardrop necklace with matching earrings and her hair was curled, and hung down to her backside in soft waves. Her heels struck the tile and echoed throughout the formal dining room as she made her way inside.

Across the other side of the room, looking out the window, stood Jean-Paul in a dark, gray suit with his hands clasped behind his back. As the sounds of her gait carried into the room, he glanced over his shoulder toward her, then casually moved his body around until he faced her. He met her gaze and his smile grew as she drew closer. He strode forward and lowered his gaze to her feet and slowly, began to rake it up her body. From her legs to her breasts, to her shoulders and back to her face, Jean-Paul’s smile shifted to a smirk.

“Magnifique,” he whispered.

She blushed as she recognized the word meant gorgeous. “Thank you.”

He bowed his head slightly, then held out his hand. She placed her hand in his, and he brought it to his lips, placing a gentle kiss on the back of her knuckles.

“About last night,” she started.

“No,” he interrupted. “Please, allow me to apologize for our bold move at assuming you were ready to see our room, our dungeon.”

“As much as I appreciate that, Jean-Paul, please, allow me to apologize for leaving so abruptly. It’s not fair for me to hold anyone else accountable for what that sack of shit did to me. You and your amazing brothers did not do this to me. It’s something I need to deal with and accept and let go.”

“No.”

He didn’t say anything else or follow up his statement. Just no.

She blinked, then tilted her head. “No?”

“That’s right. No.”

“I’m not sure I follow?”

Still holding her hand, he tucked it into his inner elbow and led her through the room toward the window he was previously gazing out of. “I will explain this one time and one time only, mon amour.” Once they stood in front of the windowsill, he turned her to face him, resting his hands on her bare shoulders. “What happened to you was not your fault and there is no reason for you to accept anything that was dealt to you. You did not ask for it, nor did you deserve it. Aubin will be dealt with and you will never have to face anything like him again. Understood?”

She appreciated his words, but she wasn’t quite sure he understood. “Yes, but—”

“No buts,” he cut in. “You do not deserve to have to ‘deal with’ anything, as you put it. You take as much time as you need and we’ll be here when you’re ready.
