Ten

I woke up when the bed dipped, as Tanner climbed in next to me. I considered telling him to go elsewhere. The four hours I slept did nothing for my bad mood, but my tired brain quashed the idea. I didn’t have the wherewithal to handle the conversation right then, and I’d be over it by the time I opened my eyes in the morning and then it would be a thing that I’d kicked him out when I saw him after his rising.

“How was your battle?”

“We won.” His grin surprised me. For a vampire, he seemed almost giddy. “Well, the battle, not the war. I led everyone further away from here. It was great.”

Was there ever a more bizarre moment than this? “I’m glad it was great.” Were battles great? Wasn’t that the opposite of what battles inherently meant? Did I even know what was and wasn’t anymore? No, I absolutely don’t. “And you managed not to talk?”

“I didn’t say a word. Caesar was amused, but no one else was the least bit the wiser.” He rolled over until he was on top of me, then stared at my face. “I should feel badly for waking you, but I don’t. I have an hour until the sun comes up. I wanted to see you. I didn’t make myself clear earlier, and I want to do so now.”

Great, I actually have to wake up for this kind of conversation. “Okay.”

“When I put my lips on you and I feed, you give me back a portion of my life that I thought I’d lost forever. I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to express to you what that means. To be able to talk? That’s a gift. I want to give the same to you. You feed me, and I do nice things for you, because it’s the only way I can make my gratitude clear.”

My cheeks heated up. That was an entirely different take than what I interpreted from what he’d said. “You’re trying to say thank you?”

“In my way. Why would you keep giving me this gift if I wasn’t doing equally nice things for you?”

It has to be a vampire thing. They didn’t believe anyone would do anything for anyone else without a really fucking good reason—like a payment. Like someone doing something nice for them. There would never be a just because for a vampire.

I leaned back on my elbows which brought my face closer to his. “So, in the future, why don’t you try thank you with me and leave it alone? Take me to a movie because you want to spend time with me at a movie and not as part of some demented payment plan? You’ll build up more good will that way.”

He blinked before he leaned down and kissed my collarbone. I shivered, my body waking up and wanting more, even though I absolutely hadn’t fed him. The thing growing between us had nothing to do with blood. “Does this feel like a business transaction to you?” he growled.
