Chapter Thirteen

Denny stared at the monitor as she waited for the file to download. After days of creative attempts to skirt around the roadblock of firewalls, she had finally gotten into the server. The information was just as scary as the first time she had seen it, but since Faith had provided assurances that it was okay, Denny chose to trust her...her what? What exactly was Faith? Friend? Employer? Fuck buddy?

“Screw it, Robertson. Just download the file.” Denny waved aside her own concerns and returned to the task at hand. It wasn’t like they were dating. It really wasn’t like they were anything, but Denny just couldn’t clear her mind of the way she felt the last time Faith had come to visit.

“Next time, D. Promise.”

Faith had promised a next time, and the words haunted Denny. “What does that mean?” She asked the question into the air, certainly not expecting an answer, but needing to ask it anyway. Frustrated and more than a little confused, Denny returned her attention to the monitor and waited not-so-patiently for the file to download, knowing full well that the “next time” that Faith had referred to could only happen if and when the information was safely decrypted and saved onto the USB drive that Faith had provided.

Denny wiggled her knee impatiently as the numbers on the download progress indicator continued to climb. Ninety-five percent. She reached for her phone to check the time as the number hit ninety-seven percent. Denny slipped the phone into her pocket as the numbers on the computer reached one hundred percent and the progress indicator told her that the files were downloaded. After taking a quick moment to save the files to the USB drive, Denny powered off her computer, packed it up, and headed for school. As much as she wanted to call Faith and tell her that she had the files, Denny had class in twenty minutes and she was running late as it was. She’d have to call her on the way and hook up later.
