Fernanda Melchor was born in 1982 in Veracruz, Mexico. She is widely recognised as one of Mexico’s most outstanding writers. In 2018 Melchor won the PEN Mexico Award for Literary and Journalistic Excellence. In 2019 she won the Anna Seghers-Preis and the International Literature Award for Hurricane Season, which was also longlisted for the National Book Award and shortlisted for the International Booker Prize. She lives in Mexico.

Sophie Hughes has translated works by a number of Spanish-language writers. Her translation of Alia Trabucco Zerán’s The Remainder was shortlisted for the 2019 Man Booker International Prize. In 2020 her translation of Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize, and in 2021 she was awarded the Queen Sofía Translation Prize.
