The 2.SS-Panzer Division’s partner in the 2.SS-Panzer Korps was 9.SS-Panzer Division “Hohenstaufen,” which had suffered heavier losses than any of the other Waffen-SS divisions among its panzer troops in Normandy, extricating barely onethird of its panzer crew. It was sent to the quiet Arnhem region in the Netherlands to rest and refit, only to become enmeshed in the famous battle for the “Bridge too Far” in September 1944. It did not receive its replacement Panther tanks until late November 1944 and so had little time for proper training of its new tank crews, which constituted more than half of its men.
