LESSONS ABOUT VISITORS

One issue that Beth has raised and that I agree with, though I understood it too late, is that an overburdened caregiver needs support, not the added burden of catering to even more people. My time horizon was short, but that is not an excuse that trumps all other considerations. A more balanced approach would have been better.

We did not try this approach, but looking back, I realize it is a commonsense one. Let visitors know before they arrive that they will need to help out. Decide with them in advance what supporting roles they will assume.

Even for visitors who come for only part of the day, following a few house rules will make the visit more enjoyable, and less frustrating, for everyone. Timeliness is the most important of these. Arriving on time and leaving on time, especially when the patient is very weak, can make all the difference in the world. At times, I would be exhausted just by sitting. If Beth joined in the visit, she would be obliged to delay or omit tasks that needed to be done that day.
