After only one day of working with L.J., Olivia was so pleased she wanted to find Mike and give him a kiss. The young man was a tireless worker and so amiable and mannerly he was a joy to have around. Though it was dank and chilly in the attic, and by the end of the day they were both covered with the accumulated dust and grime of more than a century, he didn’t seem to mind. From his attitude, one would think she was doing him a favor by letting him work for her.

The second morning Olivia awoke early. She’d had a restless night, waking often to strange sounds she couldn’t identify. Finally, unable to sleep, she dressed and went downstairs just as dawn was breaking. Mrs. Jaffee was putting on the coffee to brew when Olivia entered the kitchen and poured herself a glass of juice and filched a bagel.

“Here, now. What’re you doing in my kitchen?” the housekeeper protested. “Breakfast will be ready in a half hour and not before.”

“That’s all right, Mrs. Jaffee. This is all I want. If you need to find me, L.J. and I will be in the main attic again, taking inventory.”

“Humph. Young people. Don’t have a lick of sense. Don’t eat enough to keep a bird alive and expect to work all day. Don’t blame me if you pass out from hunger,” she grumbled as Olivia sailed out the door.

She was surprised to find L.J. waiting for her in the library. “How did you get here so early? Cappy usually doesn’t arrive until somewhere between seven and eight.”

“Oh, I have my own boat. It’s just a little fishin’ skiff.” He shrugged self-consciously. “I don’t like dependin’ on others for transportation. Besides, I figure in the evenings, on the way home, I can stop and do a little fishin’ if I feel like it.” He paused and looked worried. “I hope it’s all right if I don’t ride the tug? I wouldn’t want to break any rules.”

“I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. I’m sure that as long as you get here on time Mr. Connally will be happy.”

She finished her bagel and juice and picked up her clipboard. “Since you’re here, we may as well get started.”

They worked steadily for hours. L.J. moved various trunks, boxes and assorted junk out of the way so that Olivia could examine each furniture piece, put it on her list and tag it with a color-coded sticker. Red meant the item was to go to the refinisher, blue to the upholsterer, purple to both, green was usable as it was, orange would be sold and yellow was destined for the trash bin.

Mid-morning, Joe called to tell her that he was in Nashville, handling an emergency on another job. “Reese insisted that I fly up here, but it wasn’t that serious. Our foreman could have handled it. I should be back tonight or, at the latest, in the morning.”

“That was the big boss, huh?” L.J. asked when she said goodbye and turned off her cell phone.
