Chapter 6

Weathering

Wherever rocks are exposed at Earth’s surface, air, water, and living things cause them to change. They break down rocks into smaller pieces. Chemical reactions cause the minerals in rocks to change into new substances. Many of the processes that produce these changes result from exposure to the weather; therefore, the changes are called weathering. Weathering is the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces by natural processes. Weathering processes are divided into two main types: physical and chemical.
