The pattern ‘INTEND NP [ clause Ø to -infinitive]’ differs in the above respects from the pattern ‘PERSUADE NP [ clause Ø to -infinitive]’, discussed in section 8.1.3.1 , in which the postverbal NP is a DO as well as a semantic argument of the matrix verb.

The verb INTEND is called a raising-to-Object verb because we can conceptualize the Subject of the subordinate clause as having been ‘raised’ to the Direct Object position of the matrix clause, as shown by the arrow in (39 ).
