Summary of Own the Day, Own Your Life: Chapter 9

If the incident in late November 2013 that happened with Metro has taught the thinkers anything, it is that exhaustion can kill people even if one doesn’t necessarily want to kill people. This incident amounted to four deaths and hundreds of injured civilians along with a sleeping conductor.

Afternoons are tough for everyone overall. The post lunch period makes people drowsy and their productivity levels decline. The writer considers that if people were to literally go out of the office rather than work after having their lunch, their level of work would remain constant because no one can work properly after having their lunch.

Research done by the British has shown that out of a cup of coffee, a nap and a full night’s sleep, a nap made people the most productive rather than the alternatives. Fighting off a nap is harmful rather than beneficial. History is full of high achievers who took their naps quite seriously. If naps were counterproductive, they would have gone out of fashion.

Nick Littlehales calls thirty-minute naps a controlled recovery period (CRP). These small naps only inspire REM sleep to take place. The human mind doesn’t go into the deeper end in this period and the person wakes up alert after a thirty-minute nap. If a person were to sleep for a longer period, they would fall into deeper sleep and wouldn’t wake up refreshed.

The author suggests bringing the brain to a state where it starts working on theta and delta waves. These waves are produced when one is sleeping. The author uses binaural beats to get to this state and says that the beats are good at pushing the brain towards sleep. The author suggests that the users basically find a cool and quiet corner and take a nap without wondering about what America in general thinks about such naps.
