The Eight Steps

Please acquaint yourself fully with the Eight Steps. Although it is possible that you are not consciously aware of them, you go through them every time you smoke. Take a few minutes now to learn the Eight Steps.

STEP 1: Pick up the packet, open it and look at the cigarettes inside. Be aware of how the cigarettes look. Do it now.

STEP 2: Take a cigarette out of the packet, but don’t put it in your mouth yet. Become aware of what it feels like to hold the cigarette between your fingers. Roll it around a little to really get the feel of it.

STEP 3: Put the cigarette in your mouth. You should become aware of the sensation between your lips. Do it now. Really try to experience the shape and the feel of the cigarette in your lips.

STEP 4: Now light a match or lighter. Bring the flame up almost to the end of the cigarette, but don’t light it. You will actually feel the heat of the flame on your face and fingers. Become aware of the heat from the flame on the surface of your skin.

STEP 5: Now light the cigarette and inhale a puff of smoke. Be aware of the smoke you inhale.

STEP 6: Now exhale the smoke from the first puff. Feel it and see it coming out of your mouth.

STEP 7: Smoke the cigarette through. Of course, don’t forget to use Program 1 as you smoke it.

STEP 8: Stub out the cigarette in the ashtray. This time, stub it out rather more forcefully than normal. You are aware of the pressure on your thumb or fingers as you stub it out.
