Which are the most stressful relationships in my life?
Changing the frequency of contact
Once you have identified these relationships, the first thing to do is to think about how frequently you see the people involved. We are going to go on to talk about the quality of your relationships, but sometimes just simple changes in how often you see people might be possible. Are there people in your life whom you feel good around, but don’t see much of? Remember that the presence of a close relationship had a very protective effect on whether women got depressed or not. And we know that social support in general makes people feel better. Could you do things that mean you see more of someone that you have a supportive relationship with?
On the other hand, looking at the relationships that cause you stress, are there people in this category that you can reduce the amount of contact with? Obviously if these are your partner or children that could be a bit tricky! But it may be that there are people who cause you stress that you don’t need to see so much of.
Harry had a regular arrangement to play squash with a friend, and thought this was a good way to unwind at the end of the week. But when he completed his relationship stress worksheet he realized that he had rated this friend as very stressful. In fact, it turned out that when they went to the bar after the game his friend always wound him up about how much he was earning, and told Harry he should change his job. So he would go home feeling more stressed about his life, rather than less. Harry knew that the friend would not be likely to change this, and decided that he would reduce the frequency of the games to once a month to see if that would help.
