Case study

A young woman with learning disabilities and epilepsy has regularly been given injections of anti-epilepsy medication, and has been given them since childhood. She finds the injections painful, but she has learned that she should not complain, and should simply offer her arm for the injection, with her parents ignoring her pain and withholding her favourite doll early on if she failed to comply. Because she has learned to mask the pain effectively, everyone assumes that she is consenting to the injection, where in fact, her quietly enduring the injections is because she perceives that her feelings are not valid to those around her. No one stops to take the time to investigate with her what alternative ways of taking the medication might be better for her.
