Someone knocked on Thea’s door that night.

“Thea? It’s Elijah. May I come in?”

“Sure.” She rolled over and sat up in the bed.

He smiled and shut the door. “You seem to be adjusting well.”

“I keep saying this, but your kindness means the world to me.” She put her hands in her lap. “I don’t know where I’d be if you hadn’t let me stay here.”

“You’d be running probably, hmm?” He moved the gas lantern and leaned against the dresser. “I’m glad you’re here.” He chuckled. “You’re entertainment.”

She smiled. “Do you ever miss the life you had before?”

“No.” His beard wiggled when he spoke. “That life is long behind me. I belong here. It just took some time to realize that.”

“Don’t laugh.” Thea straightened up. “But I’m not finding the way you live as difficult as I imagined.”

“I had a hard time adjusting when I first got here.” His gaze wandered around the room. “But the drive to be a better man and my love for Anna Mae made things easier.”

“I watched you two during dinner.” She propped her leg up under the sheet. “The love you have for each other just fills the room. Anyone would be lucky to experience that connection.”

“We’ve had our ups and downs like any marriage,” Elijah said. “What’s important is that our marriage is based on the Lord. That’s what’s kept us strong. We don’t expect things to be perfect, and we know they’ll be challenges, but that’s the beauty of it. That’s what’s wrong with people today. They treat marriage as a hobby or something they can control. If it doesn’t work out, they get a divorce.” He scoffed. “What’s worth fighting for if not a marriage?”

“I told Anna Mae I wasn’t marriage material.” Thea grinned. “The more I watch you two I have to admit I’m tempted to see what it’s like.” She sighed. “I doubt I’ll have the chance now though.”

“Because of what you did that brought you here?” He walked from the dresser. “I promised not to pressure you, but prayer—”

“Please, Elijah.” She lifted her hand. “I’ll forever be grateful for your help, but I draw the line at prayer. I’ll dress like you, I’ll milk your cows, and I’ll do anything you ask, but not prayer.”

“I understand.” He backed up from the bed. “I have something to tell you. I spoke to Amos earlier. He’s not too wild about the idea of you staying, but he respects my decision. He also took into account that you’re respecting our way of life. He’d like to meet you.”

“I’ll think about it.” She lay against the headboard.

He dipped his head. “Goodnight, Thea.” He went to the door.

“Hannah told me what Jacob did.”

He turned around with a dead expression.

“You can’t be a hypocrite, Elijah.”

“How am I a hypocrite?”

“You keep saying I should pray and it would make everything better.” She clenched the sheet. “You ever tried that concerning Jacob?”

“Thea—”

“I know it hurts you to be away from him. You should’ve seen your face when I mentioned his name.
