Herschel worked with a ‘box type’ solar cooker. There have been great developments in both design and technology since those first rudimentary experiments with eggs in South Africa. Most modern solar ovens will take one of three forms. The box oven is, as one might expect, formed of a well-insulated box, lined with reflective material and enclosed with a sheet of glass, which helps build a ‘greenhouse’ effect and contributes to the rise in temperature within. A panel cooker uses a number of highly reflective panels to direct sunlight and heat into an area in which a cooking vessel is placed. Panel cookers generate the lowest temperatures as they don’t use any insulation. The highest temperatures are generated by parabolic cookers, which direct the sun’s heat towards a very specific focal point. The potential to incinerate approaching wooden ships is certainly there, but a more practical application of the parabolic solar cooker is to use it to cook things quickly.
There are myriad models of solar cookers on the market, each suited to its own purpose, and each with its own price. But perhaps the best way for the reader to get to grips with the potential of a solar oven is to build one. We are not talking full-roast-dinner-potential here, imagine cooking something more in the realms of an omelette, or perhaps a quiche with a pre-baked base. The materials needed are cheap, and most are more than likely to be found in the average kitchen in the first place. By far the most time consuming (hence frustrating) part of the process, particularly for those readers in the United Kingdom, is waiting for the sun to come out. Hopefully this experiment will whet the appetite and lead to bigger and better constructions among enthusiasts.
