15.Gradually add the eggs to the dough

“Lord Errington!” Flora snapped at the man who was about to disappear around the far corner of the gardens ahead of her. He was walking fast, obviously keen to leave the vicinity of the house, and barely slowed even though he must have heard Flora’s call.

“Errington!” Flora shouted again, louder this time, and she ran to catch up with him, despite her sore ankle protesting the sudden movement.

Her breaths coming short and fast, her face red, Flora eventually caught up with the man, who at least had the good grace to stop when he heard Flora’s heels clicking quickly on the path behind him.

“Mrs. Miller,” Errington smiled easily, as if there was absolutely nothing wrong or unexpected about him being found here.

His attitude added fuel to Flora’s internal fire, and she stood with her hands on her hips as she caught her breath. Errington looked her up and down with an infuriating expression of pity, until Flora bit out, “What are you doing here?”

“Oh, I was just waiting for my wife,” the words rolled off his tongue easily enough, but Flora saw the man’s eyes shift to the left avoiding her piercing gaze. She didn’t believe him for a second.

“You didn’t arrive with the ladies,” it was a statement and not a question, and Flora saw the line of Errington’s mouth harden.

“I followed on foot. It’s a lovely day for a walk.”

“Indeed. A very long walk, at that. It must be at least six miles through the fields. And you didn’t happen to smell anything odd as you arrived?”

“Smell?”

He was so smooth, so slick and slimy Flora thought, though she knew she didn’t have the time to have it out with the man now, making unfounded allegations would be pointless, “Yes, follow me back to the house. You might be able to help. Then you can have a drink and wait for your wife.” Flora said the last part with more than a hint of sarcasm in her voice as she walked back the way she had come, listening to make sure the man was following her.

“Tanya, have you seen Mitch?” Flora asked, as her friend met her at the side of the manor house next to the kitchen. She was stroking Amy’s back while Shona held a glass of water out to her.

“Yes, he was talking to Lady Errington out the front. I saw them through the sitting room window before I came to find you all. Should I fetch him?”

“Yes please, thank you Tanya. Now, Lord Errington, can you smell that?” Outside the back of the building the smell was even worse.

“It smells like something has died,” Errington replied, smirking.

Flora wanted nothing more than to wipe the smile from his face, but instead looked up at Mitch who was running towards her.

“Flora, what can… eugh! What’s that smell?”

“Exactly, Mitch, exactly,” Flora snapped, “Please could you investigate.”

“I’ll help him,” Errington offered, exchanging a glance with the gardener.

“Very well, we’ll close all the doors
