Cindy was propped up against the pillows when Claire approached the bed. The bruises, that seemed to be growing darker by the minute, had turned her face into a rainbow of blues, blacks and purples. She had obviously been sedated and was struggling to keep her eyes open.

At the sight of Claire she began to cry again. It was almost as if her spirit had been broken.

'I've had enough of this game,' she confessed, and Claire knew that she meant it. Cindy drifted in and out of sleep as Claire sat gently stroking her hand. There was no need for words; the girl seemed to draw comfort just from the fact that Claire was there.

Eventually a nurse approached the bed. 'You ought to go now,' she whispered to Claire. 'Your sister's in a lot of pain. I'm going to give her something to help her sleep more comfortably.'

Claire nodded, and rising, she planted a kiss on Cindy's swollen cheek. 'Mum will be here tomorrow,' she promised, and at that, the injured girl managed a weak smile as the nurse prepared her injection.
