Chapter Eight

“Prepare my bill,” Dubois told Great-Uncle Bullock a few days later. “I shall take up residence in the rented house until the French Legation is built.”

When Great-Uncle Bullock handed Dubois the bill after dinner that evening, Charity heard the Frenchman shouting all the way in the kitchen. Charity and Hope were scraping leftovers into a bucket for the pigs. They stopped to listen.

“This is robbery,” Dubois shouted. “Three hundred and twenty-three dollars! You can’t possibly mean that you think I owe you three hundred and twenty-three dollars.”

“That is exactly what I mean,” Bullock roared. “You have a bill right there explaining the charges. And I want it in United States money.”
