Keeping It Clean
As Don Aslett, author of several books on cleaning, points out, it’s much easier to keep a place clean than to get it clean. If you tend to sweep everything into your desk drawer when you leave your office and the next day pull out only what you need, things will collect in that drawer that you’ll never see again.
The old cliché about cleaning up for the cleaning lady holds great wisdom. The person who gets rid of clutter in preparation for a cleaning service is smart indeed. If there’s a lot of clutter, a janitorial service or house cleaner will only have time to straighten and clean the much-used areas, without ever getting to the corners. A cleaning person may also charge more to clean space that is cluttered.
Though a cleaning service can be very helpful, it can never solve your organizational problems. Cleaning people can straighten and clean, but they cannot make decisions about what to keep or throw away, or properly clean out and purge your desk drawers. Consequently, a cleaning service may only camouflage the underlying problems.
Imagine a room with no windows, furniture, drapes, carpet, or clutter, and guess how long it would take to clean it. Now add windows, drapes, an area rug, and furniture, and consider how much longer it would now take to clean the same room. Add first a little clutter, then a large amount of clutter, and again consider the time and effort needed to clean it properly. You can now understand the importance of simplifying your life by weeding out as much excess as possible.
