Roll on

Roll-out shelves are really just drawers. However, as they are called ‘roll-out shelves’ they are mentioned here. These are shelves that roll out on runners — like drawers — but are hidden behind cupboard doors. They often replace shelves in under-bench storage, particularly in kitchens. They are ideal for storing crockery, everyday glassware, salad bowls, bakeware, and pots and pans.

Secret weapon 2: drawers

Drawers are by far everyone’s favourite storage component because they hide a multitude of sins and create the illusion that everything is neat and tidy.

Win, lose or drawer?

Where would we be without drawers? By simply pulling on a handle you can make their contents come out to greet you. With a gentle push it all goes away, out of sight and out of mind.

Drawers, like shelves, can be made from a variety of materials, mainly melamine, timber, plastic and wire. Choose a material to suit your storage needs and situation. Drawers have width, depth, height and varying base strength.

Drawn and quartered

Drawers work perfectly for storage at chest height and lower. You need to be able to peer into the drawer in order to use it effectively. Shelves work best at eye level and above.

Utilise the height of drawers. This is the measurement of the clearance space between the internal base of a drawer and the bottom of the front face of the drawer above it. For top drawers, measure from the internal base of the drawer to the bottom of the fixing rail. Use these measurements to determine the maximum container height you can use in each drawer.

Measure all drawers separately, even if they look the same. The top drawer will almost always have a different height measurement than the rest of a set of drawers with identical front faces.

Divide and conquer

Drawers benefit hugely by having compartments, dividers or partitions. These create sections for contents that are prone to move about when the drawers are opened and closed. If you have some spare timber in the garage it’s easy to make your own drawer dividers and you can make them to the exact specifications you need. Where would we be without our cutlery drawer dividers?

Tip

By strategically placing a few dividers into a drawer you can create several compartments.
