Chapter 23
“Is she one of your clients?” Robbie asked
One thing was certain. That wasn't her. That wasn't the young woman who'd visited my office. That was not the young woman that I'd spent a night of my life searching for. I had absolutely no idea who the young woman was. “I don't know the woman. I have never seen her before.” I felt Robbie's soft hand glide across the top of mine. She left it there.
Robbie said, “I grew tired of watching this information, all of these stories about you coming over this news station repeatedly, over and over again. I couldn't take it anymore. None of these reports sound like you. None of them sound like the man I know you are. I finally got a chance to slip away from my husband. I had to come here and ask you about this.”
My attention stayed on the feel of Robbie's hand. Her softness and the slight touches she continuously placed on me caused that side of my body to tingle. She placed her hand over mine. Her strokes turned into a gentle caress. She held the top of my hand.
“Can you please? Please just take me back there. Touch me like you do. Make all of this better. Make me feel better.” Robbie begged.
A part of me wanted to do what Robbie wanted me to do with her. I wanted to give her what she'd asked for – what she needed from me. But I wanted something different this time. My picture – the picture of me that I'd seen on the televised news report remained solid in my mind. I could only think about one thing – myself – my wants. And at that moment, I wanted Robbie in a different way from how she needed me. I wanted to find out more about the news story. Robbie was a means for me to accomplish that.
I turned my hand upward. I gently held Robbie's hand allowing our palms to rest closely, hers above mine. I leaned in toward Robbie's ear. “Sorry. We must wait. I have to learn more about what's happening here. I have to know what's going on. Afterward we can go back there. I promise.” I moved my face away from her.
“But we must hurry.” Robbie urged. “Sometimes he doesn't nap long.”
I convinced Robbie to tell me about the news story. She explained how she'd first seen my picture on television earlier that day – about the same time I arrived home exhausted from the police interview at the nightclub.
“Come close to me. Get closer. Touch me like you always do. Tell me this isn't true. Tell me it's all a bad dream,” Robbie uttered.
I kept my hand on Robbie's hand, giving a gentle squeeze. “It's okay.” I placed my index finger over my lips. “Sh sh sh. Everything will work out. Please tell me more about what you know. What have the news reports said?”
“It all started as breaking news hours ago,” Robbie said. “That was before the sky opened up and rain started pouring again, that time harder than ever.
