•Jack goes to an emergency room with abdominal pain. He is diagnosed with diverticulitis and given two shots of hydromorphone (Dilaudid). The pain subsides. He’s sent home with two antibiotics and 30 oxycodone to take as needed. He crushes and snorts the pills. They’re gone in two days. He thinks about calling his sponsor, but instead tracks down the number for his old dealer and purchases pills. He makes plans to see a GI doctor, who he hopes will order him a script if he complains about pain.
