Chapter Nine

ONE MOMENT SKYE REACHED for Maddock, stroking lightly over his warm skin, and the next he felt the icy hands of death upon him. He could not remember anything so cold, not even the time he’d fallen into Levitt’s Creek while skating over the thicker parts with his slick-soled boots.

Instead of panicking, his loser friends laughed and pulled him out. He’d frozen his ass off on the way home, but a lukewarm bath and a steaming cup of cocoa—all while his mom and dad bitched him out—warmed him right back up.

This, though, whatever this thing was it sucked the heat right out of him. All Skye wanted to do was curl up and shiver. But he couldn’t. Something held him tight while moving swiftly. A clattering or chattering seemed to follow their movement through the fog, but Skye couldn’t tell if it was his teeth or the skeletal body of the creature that held him.

Only, it couldn’t be the creature. It didn’t bounce him but moved smoothly forward as if on wheels, or floating. Floating, he thought. That would explain why it didn’t dip or swerve or do anything but move in a straight line away from Maddock.

Skye kept his gaze on the torchlight for as long as he could, but eventually it winked out, leaving him alone with the monster. He wanted to call out, to say something to his mate, but the cold kept his lips glued together even while his teeth tried to chatter.

Eventually, the cold pushed him into hypothermia. He knew only because of that long ago day at the creek. His father had warned him that as a young man with less body fat, Skye was more susceptible to hypothermia than other people. He’d made him memorize and repeat back the warning signs. Skye had done it because he didn’t want his dad to worry, but now he at least had an understanding of what was happening to him.

Hypothermia started with shivering, then confusion, and then he would feel an overwhelming urge to sleep. Instead of going slowly through the steps it seemed to Skye he’d rushed through them so fast they all blurred into one.

The creature stopped. It flung Skye from its shoulder, stood him up, and pulled him close.

A hug?

Baffled, Skye tried to push it away, but his muscles didn’t work. Thankfully, the creature only embraced him hard then let go. He soon found himself back over its shoulder.

Flitting in and out of consciousness, Skye couldn’t say how long they’d traveled or where they’d ended up. He only knew the monster no longer touched him. A moment after that, he realized he stood strapped to a stone wall with hundreds of candles blazing all around him. He’d never seen so many candles. Or velvet. Not the regular kind but the crushed kind. He only noticed that because the little nooks and crannies in the fabric caught the candlelight and made it glitter over the surface. Miles of red velvet draped the windows, the furniture, and.
