Chapter Seven

LUKE WAITED UNTIL THE office manager of the apartment building left the room, leaving him and Gabriel alone in the master bedroom.

“What do you think?” Gabriel turned in a slow circle, his arms outstretched as if to encompass the entire apartment.

Luke moved close and whispered, “This is way beyond our price range.”

“It’s perfect.”

“It’s amazing but that’s not the point.” The master bedroom had a walk-in shower big enough for the both of them and a double-sink vanity. The living room had a gas fireplace and the kitchen...

Luke sighed with longing. He could see himself in that white contemporary kitchen. He saw himself making pancakes while Gabriel came up behind him and distracted him by nuzzling his neck. He saw that so clearly his heart hurt when he had to tell himself no. Now, he had to tell Gabriel the same thing.

“It’s fantastic, and I love every inch of it, but we can’t just...”

“What? What can’t we just?” Gabriel pulled Luke into his arms. “This is what you deserve.”

“There’s a difference between what I deserve and what I can afford.” A huge difference. A distance so vast it could straddle the Grand Canyon with room to spare.

“You’re not alone anymore, remember?”

“I know that. And I appreciate that.” Luke found himself calmed by the heat and scent of his husband. “But we have to be realistic.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s how reality works.” Luke pulled back and allowed himself one last look out the picture window. It faced the tallest peak in the valley. He could easily imagine waking up to that view. And going to sleep by it. He could picture a king size bed that they’d make love on every night and every morning. He let himself imagine all of that then made himself stop.

“I have money.”

“Turning a couple of one dollar bills into fifties isn’t going to cut it. We’d have to have a bank account with five grand and a credit history with more than just my one credit card.”

“I have all of that.”

Luke took a step back. “How do you have all of that?”

“I just do.”

“Gabriel, what did you do?”

“Nothing. Well, okay, I did something, but I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Why don’t you let me decide that for myself?”

“Okay. I just created some documentation for myself.”

“And when did you manage to do this?”

“Last night while you were sleeping.”

“Did you take my ID?” Luke touched his wallet but didn’t pull it out of his pocket. He wanted to trust Gabriel so badly it hurt to even ask him questions about what he’d done, but Luke needed to know.

“I didn’t take anything of yours.” Hurt furrowed Gabriel’s brow.

“Did you take someone else’s?”

“He left his wallet and his belt in the bathroom. Clearly, he doesn’t take care of his stuff.”

Luke had wondered where Gabriel had gotten that belt for the impromptu kilt. Now he knew. “You have to give those back.”

“It’s too late. I’ve changed them and I’m not changing them back. Besides, the way I look at it, Dustin owes you.”

“That doesn’t mean he owes you.
