The Passion Process
You might have to discover a few things about yourself to know what God wants you to share with others. For instance, once I’d discovered who God created me to be, I couldn’t wait to help others make that same connection. Knowing that I get to do that almost every day helps me start each morning feeling that I’m doing something that matters for God, and I love every minute of it.
Stephanie has found it more of a process than an explosion. “I first have to discover who I am, what makes me tick, what I love, and who God has designed me to be before I can get a handle on my ‘doing,’” she observed. “I don’t think I’m completely there yet, but I do believe I’m finding contentment in the bigger piece of the puzzle of who I am.”
In a letter I received from Jeff, he said, “For years I saw my job as just that…a job. Clock in at nine and leave at five. Day after day, it was the same old routine. After thirteen years of frustration, that routine ended the day I attended an Only You Can Be You conference that my church was hosting. I was challenged to give myself permission to embrace and express the talents and gifts God had given me. I learned I had to be a steward of what God had given me and that continuing to bury it was disobedient.” Jeff opened himself to what God wanted him to do and has since discovered the rewards of being true to himself and to God’s gifting and call. “I never thought a job could feel like play and be so rewarding,” Jeff reports with enthusiasm about his new role. That’s exactly how it feels when you’re doing what God made you to do!
When we live in an attitude of surrender, God leads us gently and gradually. The living out of our passion may be at one level today, as it was for Kay Warren being a pastor’s wife, and quite another a few years later, as when God stirred up a passion in her heart for the AIDS orphans.
You may have a dream that you don’t think will ever come true. Let God surprise you. Expect him to, and he will.
One night a nondescript young man took the stage on a television show called Britain’s Got Talent. It’s a show much like American Idol, complete with Simon Cowell as a judge. Simon asked the young man who he was and what he wanted to do. “I sell mobile phones,” he answered, “but I’ve always wanted to sing opera.” Opera! The panel cringed, not sure what to expect, before Simon reluctantly invited him to go on. From the moment Paul Potts opened his mouth, the audience was on its feet. He sang with a clarity and exquisiteness comparable to that of the greatest opera legends. Because he dared to open himself up to what could be possible in his life, Paul Potts’s dream has come true.
