If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God.

James 1:5 NIV

ome things come to us through a natural progression. The fruit of the Spirit-love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23)-come to us in increased measure as we surrender to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. However, wisdom is something God encourages us to specifically seek after and request.

We are not born with wisdom. Quite the opposite. Proverbs 22:15 reminds us, "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child." We are born with a sin nature and a bent way of thinking. If we want wisdom, we have to ask for it.

Many spend their lives seeking knowledge without asking for the wisdom to apply that knowledge. They amass headfuls of facts and appear quite educated by the world's standards, but they do not know how to apply what they have learned in a way that will please and honor the Lord. Even worse, much of what masquerades as wisdom in today's world is not wise at all.

We ask God for a variety of things. When did we last ask Him for wisdom?

Heavenly Father, help me seek Your wisdom, that I might apply knowledge in a way that pleases You.I n what situation do I need God's wisdom today? Have I specifically asked Him for it?
