“Is it okay if I take my break now, Robin?”

“Sure. Great work with your client earlier today, by the way,” my manager returned as she looked up at me from where she was crouched behind the sales desk. “You did an awesome job.”

I smiled at Robin, feeling proud of myself. I’d only been working here at the department store as a personal shopper for a really short time, but I was loving it. Of course, I loved working at the surf shop for completely different reasons, but now I was feeling excitement over this job. Because once the summer was over, I’d be able to pick up extra hours, and it would be perfect heading into the holiday season.

“Thank you,” I replied.

“You’re a natural at this, and I’m convinced you’re going to have a very promising future if you continue,” she offered words of praise.

That made me feel even better. I was getting confirmation that I was good at something that made me happy.

Luckily, I’d had a great client this morning. Her name was Lydia, and she came in knowing what she needed. Of course, knowing what she needed only meant that she knew she’d finally made it through law school and passed the bar exam. Now that she had proof of her knowledge in her field, she wanted to make sure she looked the part, too. So, she came in simply looking for guidance on some styles. I had no issues stepping up to help her.

Two hours after she’d arrived, I was ringing up her purchases. She’d purchased an entire new wardrobe for work. Best of all, I was thrilled that she was so open to my suggestions. Lydia even went so far as to take my recommendations on accessories into account. While I’d helped her choose some staples for her closet, I also gave her a bunch of ideas on how she could make a few small changes to give those pieces a fresh, new look. Whether it was a scarf, a belt, or a pair of shoes, Lydia gobbled up all of the ideas I’d given her.

And when I’d run her purchases through the register at the end of it all for more than eight-hundred dollars, I could see the look of approval on my manager’s face. Getting that confirmation in words now was just icing on the cake.

“I love it here,” I told Robin. “And I’m so excited to see what the holiday season will bring.”

“I’m looking forward to it, too,” she insisted. “But go ahead and take your break now. We can chat later.”

“Okay.”

At that, I turned and walked to the employee lounge. I wasn’t too proud to admit I did it with a bit of skip in my step. Because between Robin’s praise of the work I’d done and everything that had happened with Carter, I was riding out a high.

Carter.

God, he was amazing.

Beyond amazing.

I never believed men like him existed. In fact, I was convinced they didn’t exist. But every minute that I spent with him, he managed to prove me wrong.
