Chapter 9

"Oh my God Jayla, I can't believe you're having twins," Zahra beamed, looking down at Jayla's ultrasound picture. She was sitting on the couch with Jayla, who had just come back from her first doctor appointment. She learned that she was a little over four months pregnant, and that’s she found out that she was carrying more than one baby, but also what sex the babies were. She was having both a boy and a girl.

"I know, right? I definitely wasn't expecting the doctor to tell me that." Jayla smiled. "You already know that I'm going to name the boy Jahari after Daddy, right?"

"Awww, he would have been so happy to hear that. I wish he was here to see them," Zahra responded.

"Me too," Jayla said in a sad tone.

"So when are you going to tell Zander?" Zahra switched the subject. She knew that Jayla got sad when talking about their father and she didn't want to spoil the mood.

"I'm not," Jayla nonchalantly responded.

"Why not?" Zahra questioned.

"You already know why," Jayla huffed.

"Yeah, I know what you told me, but I still refuse to believe that he would do that. I think that Madeline chick was lying," Zahra pointed out.

Jayla rolled her eyes. "Zahra, I saw his name on the check and the text. She wasn't lying."

"Okay, but it still doesn't make sense to me. He was too upset when he thought you had an abortion. Plus, didn't you say that he is still calling and texting you? Why would he do all of that?

"I don't know." Jayla shrugged her shoulders. She was confused her damn self about why Zander was still acting as if he didn't try to buy her baby. "Maybe he thinks that if he keeps being nice to me; I would eventually decide to take the offer. Or maybe he figured out that he messed up and is just trying to be nice, because he thinks I would go the paparazzi about my pregnancy and tell them what he and Madeline tried to do."

Zahra glanced at her. "You wouldn't do that, would you?"

"No I wouldn't do that," Jayla responded with a quick shake of the head. "You know me better than that."

"Yeah, you're right," Zahra said, looking over at the time on the cable box. "Hmm, I hate to rush you, but Mom will be home soon. You might want to go ahead and get out of here.”

Jayla waved her hand. "I'm not leaving because of Cynthia. I'm not scared of her. I need to talk to her anyway."

"I don't think this is a good time to talk to Mom," Zahra protested. "She was in a bad mood this morning."

"I don't care about that. We need to talk. I deserve an explanation for what she did last time,” Jayla said. "And an apology," she added.

"I know you do, but you're probably not going to get either one. I think it's just best that you leave."

Jayla gave her sister a weird look. "Okay, you was all for us talking a few months ago, but now you don't want us to.
