Do No Harm
Leland and I had been in the same middle and high school friend group. She had closer friends whoâd attended Holton since third grade with her, but we hung out together during summers because our families belonged to the same country club. Our bond was based on laughter and memories as middle schoolers hanging out at the country club pool and golf course and later in high school going to parties and dances with our other classmates. She was a little bit older and wiser than me and I looked up to her like a big sister, cheering on her athletic and social bravery.
Perhaps if Iâd been older or less insecure, I would have confided in Leland about what had happened in that room with Brett and Mark. But that would have been new territory for us, far more serious than smoking cigarettes on the golf course and praying our parents wouldnât find out.
Leland had been a quintessential Holton-Arms student, with her blonde hair, preppy wardrobe, and promising future. She had always been assertive and confident, and she was a gifted athlete at everything she tried: basketball, field hockey, tennis, and especially golf. Once we graduated high school, we kept in touch, and I visited her at University of Virginia our freshman year, doing the typical partying that kids do when theyâve escaped a disciplined environment. She went on to become a professional golfer after college and coached at Georgetown, until chronic pain ended her career.
After I moved to California, Leland and I mostly lost touch, and I had only seen her a few times in the last twenty-five years. Iâd heard through the grapevine that she wasnât doing well, dealing with both her chronic pain and addiction issues that I believe resulted from her pain medications.
