The Coming Conflict

After singling out the nations that He told Ezekiel to prophesy against, God explains why. Addressing Magog (Russia) and its allies, He says,

In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.

Ezekiel 38:8–9

The coalition of northern nations will unite and attack Israel, but their efforts are futile because God is fighting for Israel:

I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the LORD.

Ezekiel 38:22–23

Ezekiel’s prophecy is fascinating from so many angles. Of particular interest is the coalition of nations that are arrayed against Israel. In her short modern history, Israel has faced some formidable enemies, but never an alliance of this size.

Regarding the sequence of prophetic events, Ezekiel makes it clear that two requirements must be met before this battle can unfold. First, the people Israel will be back in their own land, a miraculous regathering that took place in 1948. The second requirement is that the attack will take place “in the latter years” (verse 8). This could have indicated that the event would not be fulfilled in Ezekiel’s lifetime, but here the term used for “latter years” dates this prophecy to the last days before the return of Christ.

Still, this united front opposing Israel takes place prior to the previously mentioned events of the Tribulation (the drying of the Euphrates River, the march of the kings of the east and the battle of Armageddon). In fact, once the names of the ancient nations are updated to their modern-day equivalents, both religious and secular observers see Ezekiel’s prophecy taking place today. Let’s look at just a few of their comments:

Ezekiel’s roster of nations for the Gog-Magog war continues to align perfectly for the first time in history. “Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; . . . Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.” The other nations on Ezekiel’s roster are all either Russian client states or old Soviet client states, with the exception of Turkey, which is rapidly being pushed back into the Islamic world by the European Union.

In the post-Soviet period, Tehran and Moscow began to view and term their cooperation as “strategic”—each side viewing the other as integral to its own national security, internal stability, and territorial integrity.
