MAYNE

“You’re brooding,” Blair said from somewhere behind me. I’d heard her call out when she arrived earlier, but I let Anders greet her, hoping she’d leave me to my thoughts rather than try and draw me out.

“I’m contemplating.”

“What?”

“Right this second, your demise,” I said, my voice petulant even to my own ears.

“We should feed. It will make you feel better.”

“I’ll have Anders prepare mine later. Or you could go find him and get him to heat some for you now and then sit and have a nice chat with him while you feed.”

“Oh my. I haven’t seen you this low since . . . Well, now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this low,” Blair said worriedly. She walked around my chair and reached for my hand. “Come with me, Tremi. I’m hungry and haven’t been to the buffet in ages.”

“Gluttony is a sin.”

“I’m sure being undead ranks above that. Come on. I won’t take no for an answer. Neema’s going to join us. It’s been ages since we got to see her play with her food. She has almost as much fun as Genji, and you know what a pleasure she is to watch.”

I thought about it for a second and realized it might make me feel a bit better if I had some sustenance, so I stood and glared at my friend. “No pep talks, no ‘it’s all going to work out in the end’ or ‘everything will be okay.’ None of that shit. We go to one of the buffets, find some amusement, and then you let me come home alone to sit in peace and quiet.”

“Consider my lips zipped,” Blair said with a mock bow.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

Blair didn’t answer, just reached out and grabbed my hand. In the next second, the smell hit me, and I stumbled back as I adjusted to the harsh lights and echoing noise.

“This place is a cesspool,” Blair said with a frown. “I’m going to go see a friend. Are you going to do your usual rounds or . . .”

“I might as well since we’re here,” I said with a shrug. “Where is Neema?”

I heard a man scream, his voice filled with anguish and pain, and Blair and I both looked in that direction.

“There she is,” Blair said cheerfully. She took off down the walkway toward the noise, still invisible to those around her, but stopped abruptly when a dangerous-looking man walked past her. She slowly turned and watched him walk away, then hurried after him and whispered something in his ear. He collapsed to his knees and moaned loudly, and I saw a brief glimpse of her teeth as she bent over his back and latched onto his neck. After a few seconds, she let him go and whispered something in his ear. She took a step back, and the man started clawing at his face, drawing blood right before he flipped over the rail and fell three stories to the ground below.
