My kitchen suddenly felt tiny once Jordan with his miles of broad shoulders and long legs was standing inside it. I tried to calm my excited little heart bouncing around and busy myself with making coffee.
I could feel his warmth when he walked up behind me, his breath inches away from my neck. I lost count as I spooned ground coffee into the filter.
âWhat kind of coffee you got there?â he asked.
My hands were so jittery coffee spilled from the spoon. We both ignored it.
âWhat are you a fancy coffee snob now?â I scooted to the side so he could see for himself. âIs that good enough for you?â
âIâve used an espresso machine for the last couple years.â
âNo.â I gasped, returning to the coffee machine. âDo you use the tiny cups, too?â I snorted at the picture of a tiny espresso cup in Jordanâs big hands. I poured water into the dispenser.
âSometimes,â he said, taking a step closer to me. âAnd itâs good, Sophie.â
âMhmm,â I hummed. Click. I turned on the coffee machine.
âMaybe I should make you a cup some morning?â he said. A bright idea. I was pretty sure if Jordan was making it, I would like it. âI can still add cinnamon.â
I twirled around. My back was against the kitchen counter. Jordan put an arm around each side of me and hunched his shoulders so we were face to face.
âNow youâre a fancy espresso drinker.â I raised my chin. âWhat else is new?â
He took a step back, crossing his arms. âWell, I like plants.â I felt cold in his bodyâs absence.
âYou like plants now? Youâre a plant daddy?â
He grabbed my hands as if pleading with me. âI donât know what that is, but please donât call me that ever again.â
âOkay, so what do you mean you like plants?â I cocked my head, my ponytail falling across my shoulder.
âI have maybe ten different potted plants around my place. They each have their own schedule with the sun and water. Iâve done this for years now. I like the routine of it.â
âDid you name them?â I felt a pang in my chest, dying to know the plant routine.
He just grinned. I knew Jordan. Heâd definitely named them. âNow, you. Tell me something new.â
âSomething new.â I tapped my chin thoughtfully. He felt like something new and something familiar all at once. âIâve gotten super into reading mysteries and thrillers. I canât get enough. Iâll read one a night sometimes.â
Jordan laughed. âYou say this like youâre admitting an addictionâ ââ
I grabbed his hand and led him back through the living room, then turned into my bedroom. I pointed at the bookshelves lining the wall stuffed with books. His eyes went wide at the sheer volume.
âI never knew you were this into mysteries.â He walked in and perused the spines. âWhat a collection.â
âI never knew I was into them either. But my first year of teaching felt so stressful and exhausting, I needed an outlet. An escape. Another teacher raved about this Gillian Flynn book and lent it to me⦠I havenât stopped since.
