CHAPTER 12

TYLER

Cassie grins and slings her bag over her shoulder, taking off as the sun starts to dip toward the horizon. I watch through the windows as she stops with Kennedy and Annika for a few minutes. The pair of them laugh together as Cassie takes Annika and spins around with her.

I stand at the window, watching as Cassie dances with the baby. For a moment, I can see a future that I missed out on with her.

Where would we be if I had stayed that night and fought for her instead of taking off?

As Cassie heads to her car with Kennedy, I turn around and drop down onto one of the couches. Matt and Ben stand across from me, their arms crossed and matching scowls on their faces.

If I didn’t know better, I would have thought that they were twins separated at birth. They stand there staring at me while I try to prepare myself for whatever is about to happen. Whenever they come at me like they’re my disapproving parents, I know that I’m in for a lecture.

“Do you want to tell us what’s going on?” Matt asks.

“I’m sorry, Dad,” I say, rolling my eyes as I cross my arms. “I didn’t know it was weed, I swear. I thought it was oregano.”

Ben snorts and drops down onto one of the other couches. He kicks his feet up on one of the small tables. “Funny. We were talking about the new behavior. You’ve been on time for two practices in a row. You’ve been engaged and not an asshole at practice. What’s going on?”

I shrug. “I thought a lot about what you said.”

“You thought about it?” Matt’s jaw looks like it’s about to hit the floor. “I didn’t think that you would actually listen to anything we said.”

“I’ll have you know that I gave it a lot of thought, and you’re both right. I’m getting too old to be running around and partying like I did years ago. I need to get my shit together.”

Ben’s eyes widen. “Excuse me, could you repeat that last part? I’m not sure that I heard it quite right.”

I flip him off. “I’m tired of partying every night. I have been for a while but stopping didn’t seem like it was worth it. I took another look at the sales reports and you’re right. We’re not in trouble yet, but we could be eventually. It’s time to slow down on my life otherwise I’ll have nothing to show for it.”

Although, it’s the truth, there’s more to it than just having something to show for my life.

The other night with Cassie was amazing. When we woke up in the morning, we did it all over again. When I left late that afternoon, I started thinking about the future that we could have had together.

I told her I loved her back then.

My chest constricts slightly just thinking about it. I never planned on telling her I loved her, but when I saw the doubt and hesitation between us, the words just slipped out.
