“You’re glowing.”

Kate looked at Shannon in surprise. “What?”

“Your face is actually glowing.” Shannon came to stand before Kate’s desk. “It’s Robin, right?”

Kate hesitated. Did her happiness show? The last thing she wanted to do was hurt her friend’s feelings.

“I’m right.” Shannon smiled. “Don’t worry. I knew when I left on Friday it wasn’t me he was interested in.”

“I’m sorry, Shannon. I thought he’d like you.” Though, truthfully, Kate wasn’t sorry Robin had spurned Shannon’s advances.

“He does.” Her friend gave her a quick hug. “He just likes you better.”

“I can’t remember when I’ve been this happy.” In fact, Kate had to work to keep a silly grin off her face.

“Good. You deserve some happiness.” Shannon grabbed her mail from the slot and turned for the door. “Go for it, Kate.”

“Oh, I intend to.” Kate enjoyed every moment with Robin, acutely aware their time together was limited. Sooner or later, he’d return to the Fae. However, he had put off the idea of contacting Nic when she’d mentioned it. And she certainly hadn’t argued with him.

Maybe he’d changed his mind about leaving. Giddy butterflies fluttered in her stomach at the thought and she tried to dismiss them. Robin had to leave. She couldn’t expect him to remain tied to her for the rest of his life.

She paused. No, the rest of her life. The butterflies turned into a rock. She’d grow old, but he’d remain young and gorgeous. How could they possibly stay together then? She found it amazing enough that he wanted to be with her now, but when she was old and gray? Not likely.

With a sigh, she turned toward her desk. Today was enough. In fact, the only way it could be any better would be to find Nana’s will. Maybe... She shook her head to dismiss that fleeting idea. Her last experience in trying to find it had resulted in a visit to the police station. She wasn’t anxious to repeat the experience.

“Good morning, Kate.” Grant strolled into the office and paused by his mailbox.

“’Morning.” She forced a smile and sank into her chair to pick up a stack of papers. Maybe work would take her mind off her dark thoughts.

“Um, Kate?”

Glancing up, she found Grant approaching her desk. “Yes? Do you need something?”

“Well, actually I was wondering if you’d like to catch that new movie on Friday.”

Kate blinked. “With you?”

“Yes, of course.”

Hot damn, he was asking her for a date. Her levity returned. “Thanks, Grant. That would be nice, but I’m seeing someone right now.” How strange it felt to say that—how strange and how wonderful.

“Oh, um, I see.” He backed away. “Well, keep it in mind.”

“I will.” Kate stood, her smile returning. Grant Coates had finally asked her out. Didn’t it figure? Now that she’d met Robin, no one else could begin to compare.

“Kate.” As if she’d conjured him up, Robin burst into the office, nearly knocking Grant over as the man left.

“What?” He appeared rushed, excited. Had something happened?

“I was thinking of you.” Before she could respond, he pulled her close and claimed her lips in a fervent kiss that made her toes curl.
