The Wait

I hate waiting. I hate not knowing what's going on. I hate not finding out important information until the last minute. And I hate when plans change, especially when it happens repeatedly. Funny, since I just basically described the Army life. Always waiting, always in the dark, always being told one thing, then another, then something that completely contradicts the first two things you were told. This is just the way of things when you're married to a Soldier, and my husband's trip home for R&R was no exception.

Dax sent me an email message shortly before he left his base in Iraq, and as far as I knew, I wouldn't hear from him for a few days, possibly not until he'd arrived back in the U.S. and was just a few hours from coming home. The last thing he said to me was that it usually takes about two to three days to make it home, but that it could take up to a week. Great. Awesome.

I felt like I was waiting for someone to go into labor or something, staring at my phone, ready to go, just waiting for "the call". The call wouldn't come until Dax was back in the U.S. where he had cell reception, but he was able to send me a few messages along the way.

The first message came when he reached his first checkpoint, still in the middle east, but out of Iraq. That right there was a huge sense of relief, knowing that he was out of danger for the first time in almost four months. He had Wi-Fi in Kuwait, but there were no “American” plug outlets, so he kept his message short to save his laptop battery. "Hi, babe, I'm here. Not sure how long I'll be here or where I fly to next, but I'll let you know when and if I can. Not sure when that will be, though. I love you."

The second message came when he reached his second checkpoint, still overseas, but thousands of miles closer, in a country that people actually visit by choice. A beautiful, history filled, SAFE country. This message had a little bit more detail as to when I could expect to see him. It was a full day later than I was hoping he'd be home, but still...

The next message I get from Dax will be when he calls or texts me from his cell phone, something he hasn't done in four months. That will mean he's back in the U.S. That will mean he's almost home. The wait is almost over.
