“Well, of course you said yes,” Ava said, giving a mighty eye roll as Lacey told her about the surprise invitation later that night in their apartment.

Waiting until they’d gotten home had been torture, but she didn’t dare say a word about going to Bella-Moritz in the dressing room at Once Upon A Time. This definitely seemed like the sort of thing that required discretion. After all, George and Amal Clooney hadn’t run to Facebook to tell people they were on the guest list for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding the minute their invitation had arrived, had they?

No, they hadn’t.

“Wait a minute. You did say yes, didn’t you?” Ava’s eyes widened and her voice went a little panicky. “Please tell me you said yes.”

Lacey bit her lip. “I said yes.” Happiness coursed through her, with a heavy dose of nerves. She felt like she’d just consumed three espressos in rapid succession.

“Thank goodness.” Ava clutched her heart and fell backward onto the sofa in dramatic relief.

Lacey began pacing back and forth in their tiny living room, which seemed tinier than ever now that she was about to go stay in an actual palace. “Do you really think we should, though? Because I feel like it’s a completely crazy idea.” She pressed a hand to her abdomen as her stomach churned.

Lacey didn’t know a thing about royalty. The only thing she had to go by was the theme park princess handbook, and suddenly that seemed to be wholly inadequate. Was she supposed to curtsey when she saw Henry and Rose on their home turf? How was she supposed to address them? Somehow, calling them by their first names no longer seemed appropriate.

Ava propped herself up on her elbows and shook her head. “It’s not crazy at all. You obviously like Prince Henry. Apparently, the feeling is mutual.”

“It’s not like that. Henry made that very clear.” Lacey felt her giddy smile begin to wobble off her face.

“As friends, of course.”

Those had been Henry’s exact words when he’d invited her to the ball—no doubt because Lacey had made the mortifying mistake of thinking he was going to kiss her on the haunted shipwreck ride.

“What do you mean?” Ava frowned.

Lacey cleared her throat. “He said we’d danced together in my castle, so it only seemed fair we should dance in his.”

Ava’s eyes about bugged out of her head. “Oh em gee, that’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard.”

“And then he added, ‘as friends.’” Lacey arched a brow. “I rest my case.”

“I’m still not convinced. He’s flying you and your best friend—” Ava paused to point to herself, “—all the way to the French Riviera for a Petunia Party.”

Lacey felt herself smile again. “Flower Festival.”

Ava frowned in mock concentration. “Are you sure? I thought you said Daisy Dance.”

“Flower Festival and Royal Ball.” Lacey picked up a throw pillow and swatted Ava with it, but at least she was no longer thinking about almost accidentally kissing a prince.

Not much, anyway.

“We’re friends. Period.” Still…a royal ball.
