Chapter 10
Naked and Nicked
I didn’t work that night.
Everything I owned was in the back of my car; everything that I thought I needed. I had my decks and my records and some clothes – and that was it. I’d just grabbed it all, and I was gone.
I knew that it was over between us. We’d had a few difficult moments, but this was the final straw. I had realized that when she found out I was taking drugs, this would be the end of the relationship. There was no way we could ever get back together.
Now I had nowhere to stay and nowhere to sleep; so I drove into the centre of Manchester. I always ended up going into Manchester town centre when I didn’t know where to go; it was like home for me. That evening I drove around the town, thinking about Tania and the kids, and the fact that they now knew for sure about the drugs. I thought about some of the things we had said to each other in the heat of the moment; and then all of a sudden I sensed God.
I can’t really describe it any other way. I was suddenly aware of a supernatural presence, as if I was being led. I felt like someone was standing behind me, watching over my shoulder. This was nothing to do with me hearing voices. I was used to that and I’d lived with it for some years by now. This was more to do with a realization that God was there and that, in some mysterious way, he was leading me. It was the most amazing thing.
I knew that I had at last mastered the art of mixing; so I began to think about making a living out of DJ-ing and about producing my own record. This was unusual for me, because the thought of making money out of music was the last thing on my mind; but this thought was with me as I drove around the centre of town.
That night I had nowhere to sleep, so I went to one of the car parks in Manchester town centre and slept in the back of my car, across the seat. The next day, when I woke up, I still felt that sense of calling; I was convinced that God was leading me. My mind was still preoccupied with the previous night’s thoughts about DJ-ing and producing my own record.
I went to a local garage and bought a Bic razor, some shaving soap, a toothbrush and some toothpaste; then I went into the toilet and got cleaned up. I came out and my mind was fixed – not on getting myself accommodation but on getting the extra equipment I needed to make a ‘demo’ track.
I bought a copy of Loot magazine and I sat in my car and started to look for the things that I would need to get this recording together. I needed some quality monitor speakers, a good amp, a Teac 4-track recorder, and a top-of-the-range Akia Sampler.
