Chapter Seven

Patrice

Patrice took another drink order and nodded at two more customers who had hands raised to flag her down. She hurried to pour a beer from the tap and deliver it before striding across the way to help the next two. The Shifty Cat was packed for a weeknight. She had no idea why, but she wasn’t about to look her gift horse in the mouth either. This was exactly the boost she needed to pay for the pool table she’d been eyeing.

The door opened as she passed it on her way to the register to make change. She stopped, surprised, as Hunt walked in with the rest of the guys behind him. Alarm speared through her, overriding her pleasure at seeing him. And at who else he was about to see. This was not going to be good.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, standing between him and the bar.

She felt the rest of the room turn to stare and a hush fell over the place.

Hunt hesitated. The only sound in the room was the Johnny Cash song drifting out of the speakers connected to her docking station. The rest of the crew glanced at each other uneasily. Except for Grayden. He had his stony gaze already locked on Brinkley over at the bar. So much for not noticing.

“What is he doing here?” Grayden demanded before Hunt could answer.

Hunt craned his neck around her and narrowed his eyes. “Which one is he?” Hunt asked.

“The one who looks like he grew out instead of up. ’Roided out arms,” Grayden said with a nod toward the guy at the far end of the bar.

“I see.” Hunt’s eyes flashed and the air between them suddenly felt thicker. She tightened her grip on the empty tray she held in one hand and prayed today would be the day the Bad News Bears stopped being quite so bad. “What the hell is he doing here?” Hunt asked. “I thought he was injured.”

Patrice sighed. “He was released from the hospital earlier today. He showed up earlier with a few friends.”

“And you let him in?” Grayden demanded.

She gave him a hard look. “I can either let in all of the troublemakers or none,” she said pointedly.

Truth be told, she really didn’t want to start the shitstorm that was sure to follow if she refused service to Brinkley after that fight. Grayden and the others were scowling and muttering about trying the new steakhouse on the other end of town.

But Hunt shook his head. “It’s fine,” he said. “We’ll stay for dinner and drinks.”

“We will?” Anchor asked and Grayden and the others stared at him like he’d lost his mind. Or just given them the world’s best Christmas present.

Hunt nodded. “Go grab us a table,” he said and the guys all fanned out around him, headed for a booth in the back with hoots and hollers. “I’ll be there with drinks in a minute,” Hunt called after them.

Slowly, one by one, the other customers went back to their conversations.
