Chapter 4

Baul

They knew as soon as they locked eyes with her that she was the one. Words weren’t necessary. The way their inner beats roared was more than enough confirmation. She was the one. Not the Champion that would unite the Tri-Realms, nor anyone of importance to the Prince. The power she leaked was not from the grimoire, but from the cultivated amethystian sword no doubt gifted from the magician she formerly served. No, she was their mate, their fated mate, the person they had been waiting for before they knew that they were waiting for someone to come.

Isaiah released a ragged breath just as Baul sucked in deep. Baul held his to calm himself down. Their blood boiled, cocks twitched, and rational minds began to dissolve. They were fusing into one being hellbent on her. She was the only thing that mattered to them then, mission be damned. And they would have her if they caught her in time.

She might not be the thief we were after, after all. But she has done a phenomenal job stealing our hearts, he mused, as they closed in on the feisty cat shifter baring her fangs.

“Be calm,” he ordered, surprised by the gruffness of his tone.

“Oh, just get it over with! Stab me already! I don’t want to be lectured by the likes of you.” She glared at him, and he wanted to wrap his hand around her throat, hold her close, and force his tongue down her throat to quiet her arrogant tongue. But that would come in time. For now, reason had to rule Baul’s baser instincts.

“We didn’t come to harm you. My partner and me. We… You…”

“That damn scent of yours is driving us wild,” Isaiah roared, his inner lion flaring up again. Amethyst’s eyes widened as she shrunk into herself.

Baul beat at Isaiah’s chest with a closed fist, glaring his way. They had to be calm or risk really hurting their mate in the ensuing scramble. “Please, enchantress. Do not be afraid. You can smell it too, no? Our desire for you is strong. Is that not what you broke the order for? Human desire. But rest assured we have more than enough for you. Protection, too. If you’ll accept it.”

That seemed to do the trick. Her defensiveness melted away in waves, fangs and claws retracting, tail and ears. And as she inhaled deep, she sighed with a dazed expression that almost made Baul roar too. They were so close to having her spread underneath them as they all drank their fill. But first she needed to trust them.

And, Baul thought, we have to honor our promise to deliver more than enough for her.
