Chapter 5

DEAL WITH CONFLICTS AND BOUNDARIES IN YOUR OWN WAY

Introverts and highly sensitive people typically do not care to set boundaries or become part of a conflict. Sometimes, we put off a confrontation again and again because the right time and the right means never seem to materialise. At other times, we become involved in disagreements, and it can cost us dearly in terms of energy.

If we still sometimes find ourselves in the middle of a power struggle, it may be, for example, because some of us are very sensitive about justice. Things need to be just – or we can react quite sternly. It is rare for us to shout or slam doors. The reaction is often an internal reaction in the first instance. We feel an internal agitation like Kagan’s high-reactive children whom I described in Chapter 1. This internal agitation steals our peace of mind – and, sometimes, also our good night’s sleep. It makes a huge dent in our ability to concentrate and in our stock of energy. Therefore, it is especially important to us not to engage in more battles than necessary.
