It is important to understand that each aircraft that left Martin-Nebraska had an identity, much like vessels in the Navy. These were ships of the air, and, while the planes were as identical structurally as they could be, their fate and the crews of American boys who filled them were individually unique. The plant workers were not just building trivial household goods. They were building weapons for victory, weapons that in the end made the world a safer place. However, these same aircraft did sometimes serve as funeral pyres for the aircrews aboard. Victory did not come without danger and sacrifice. Because of that, workers made absolutely sure to produce the best quality aircraft, free of any defects.
