Chapter Twelve

Eden’s stomach heaved and she fought back the nausea and dizziness by forcing deep breaths in through her nostrils. His parents murdered my mother. He knew. He knew and never said anything. Why? Why is he here? My mother’s death wasn’t an accident. He wanted to kill me. Her mind reeled at all the information that had been brought to light. The world whirled around her and her pulse roared in her ears. I’m going to be sick.

“Eden?” Xander placed his hands on her shoulders and she jerked back, running into the open door. She hissed in pain, wincing slightly as her back grazed the metal. “Hey.” Xander held his hands up. “I know you’re upset, but we need to go. Please, Eden, get in the car.”

Eden swallowed as fresh tears pricked her eyes. Despite it all she trusted him. What if he isn’t really your friend? What if he was only nice out of respect to Nate? Is that why he doesn’t acknowledge me when I flirt? Do I disgust him like I do everyone else?

Questions swirled through her mind and she gagged as bile rose up her throat.

“Eden, please.” Xander guided her to the car.

Where is he taking me? I can’t do this. I need to...I need space. I need to get away.

“Get off me,” she snapped, shoving him away.

Xander tripped over his feet, his eyes widening with surprise at her action.

“Leave me alone,” she ordered. Her eyes narrowed, daring him to take a step toward her again. “Leave me alone,” she repeated through gritted teeth. She turned on her heel and stomped off—to where she didn’t know, just anywhere but here. I can’t be around him right now.

“Eden?” Xander trotted after her. He grasped her elbow tightly and spun her around to face him. “I’m not leaving you here.”

She balled her hands into tight fists as rage consumed her. “I’m not going anywhere with a man who was supposed to kill me.” She wrenched her elbow out of his grasp and glared at him.

Xander’s eyes darted away from hers and he shook his head. “I would never hurt you.”

“Too late,” she seethed, backing away from him.

“Eden,” Xander grasped her arm again and hauled her to him.

She thrashed in his grip, but couldn’t bring herself to do something to actually harm him. Damn it. He wanted you dead at one point. He was keeping secrets from you.

“I’m not leaving you here, Eden. Be sensible. Get in the car. Please,” he begged. He reached up and smoothed her hair out of her face. “We’re in the middle of nowhere.”

Eden clamped her mouth shut and swallowed. Concern and fear swirled in Xander’s eyes and she glanced away. He was right and they both knew it. There was nowhere to go here. Can I stay with him? How many lies has he told me?

Xander loosened his grip on her arm, but didn’t fully release her as he tugged her back to the SUV. He tucked her inside and shut the door.
