Leaving Neffraxus isn’t something I want to do, but I know he’s safe here with Rieka and Visha. Safer than he would be if he came with us. He brings his pale gold eyes to mine as I run my hand along the scales of his face.

“I’m sorry, Neff, but you have to stay here. Where we’re going, it isn’t safe.”

‘Neff no want to stay. Neff go. Help keep Kai safe.’

His voice is full of sadness and worry in my head.

“Neff, I’ll be okay.” Summoning a small tendril of shadow from my palm, I hold it up to Neff. “See, buddy, I have powers to keep me safe. So does Will. We’ll be okay.” He watches as the tendril lashes about from my palm before drooping his head, turning away from me as he goes back over to where Rieka and Visha wait in the doorway.
