CHAPTER ELEVEN

MADISON lay in her husband’s arms.

He had drawn the covers up over them. To do that, he’d had to let go of her; she’d thought he was moving away so she’d reacted with instinctive pride and moved first…

But he hadn’t let her.

“Hey,” he’d said softly, “where are you going?”

And he’d reached for her, tucked her head on his shoulder and held her close against him.

“Okay?” he’d whispered.

“Yes,” she’d answered, and what a pathetic answer it was. There had to be a better way to describe the way it felt to lie like this, her body pressed to the length of his, his heart beating under her palm, his scent, a glorious blend of man and sweat and sex, in her nostrils.

Tariq raised his head from the pillow, leaned in and kissed her mouth.

“You’re sure it wasn’t too quick?”

Madison blinked. He’d been talking about what they’d just done. About making love. Well, how could she have known? He’d used the word “okay,” and “okay” didn’t come close.

Making love with him had been wonderful.

“Sweetheart? Was it too quick?”

She smiled, touched her finger to his beautiful mouth and traced its outline.

“It was wonderful. You were wonderful.”

“I’m not looking for compliments.” He flashed a slow, sexy grin. “But I’m glad to get them.”

She laughed. He did, too. Who would have thought laughter could be a part of what happened in bed? Her mother’s life had made sex seem like a series of transactions. Her own limited experience had been—was there such a word as “underwhelming”?

Was this the difference between having sex with a man you liked and making love with one you adored?

“What?” he said, when he saw the color rise in her face.

“I was just thinking that—that making love with you was—it was—”

Tariq kissed her tenderly. “For me, too,” he said gruffly. “It was like nothing I’ve ever known.”

He gathered her closer, stroked his hand lightly down her body, luxuriating in the feel of her against him.

“There was no one in your life when we met?”

“No. There wasn’t anyone for a very long time.”

Tariq’s heart soared. “That’s good.” Good? It was the understatement of the year. “That’s perfect,” he said, and kissed her.

The kiss began gently but as her mouth softened under his, he felt his hunger for her returning. He wanted her with an intensity that still surprised him.

What if he told her that? If he said, Madison, I know I forced you into this marriage but you need to know that I—that I—

That he what?

There was something in his heart, right within his grasp. A feeling. An emotion…

Taking a wife was his duty. He had been raised to understand that, and it had become even more important after Sharif’s death. He understood that, too.

Marriage was required of him.

But not this.

Not this feeling of delight, each time he looked at his wife. Not this flood of happiness in his heart. Not the sense that he was standing on the very edge of a cliff and the wrong word, an unintended admission, could send him tumbling over the edge.
